L’odore come scultura tra memoria, luogo e potere
With Maria Candida Gentile and Luca Vitone
Moderator: Francesca Guerisoli
The exhibition brings together for the first time the entire body of work that grew out of the monolfactive achromatic sculpture per l’eternità, created in 2013 for the Italian Pavilion at the 55th Venice Biennale. The subtitle Premise for a trilogy refers to the three works Vitone created with the collaboration of Ligurian master perfumer Maria Candida Gentile that are based on the sense of smell, on the exploration of the relationship between memory, place and sensory perception in relation to power: Per l’eternità (2013) as economic power, Imperium (2014) to represent the state, A tale of forked tongues (2017) on military authority.
Each of these works focuses on the ability of the sense of smell to activate memories and deep connections, generating an immersive environment as a work of art that challenges the traditional aesthetic and formal canons of contemporary art.
In creating perfumes, Maria Candida Gentile takes a distinctive approach, emphasizing the use of natural raw materials and the importance of telling personal stories through fragrances. During the meeting, the master perfumer and the artist will tell the audience how their collaboration has focused on the sensory experience in the creation of achromatic monolfactive sculptures.
